No proposal is complete, no financing finalized and no land identified, but there is plenty of emotion over a Detroit City Council plan to create a black business district known as African Town. Well I think their hearts are in the right place for a city dying from a slowly metastasizing cancer and obviously it's spread to the brain. I'm not sure what more can be said. Although this guy summed it up nicely: "I think it's one of the dumbest ideas I've ever heard about and frankly insulting," said Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson. "How would residents of Detroit feel if I would propose having a Honky Town in Oakland? I would be run out of office, and rightfully so." Can we have an Amen. Comments
This sort of thing, like love, must be allowed to bloom naturally, it cannot be forced. Look at Harlem now as an example (with revitalization, renovation, and new busineses fluorishing), compared to what it once was (a ghastly place you wouldn't want to be caught dead -- or alive -- in, during any time of day or night) Posted by: Joni at October 2, 2004 04:03 PMI think african town is a great idea... LOL White Mans Land...You know how many protests there would be. Jesse, and Sharpton would be there before you could say Fried Chicken.
Latest news as of: 10/18/04 Do you (anyone) think it would benefit the city or hinder it's ability to grow and be positively productive for the residents? Keep in mind Detroit is about 81.6 percent black. Posted by: at October 18, 2004 11:24 PMI have alot to say and think about this. Actually I'm thinking about an updated post with the recent developments. What mostly comes to mind and I can't seem to get around is: The city government coming up with ignorant resolutions like this that are creating divisions between race and ethnic groups (and against the law) can anything save Detroit? That's not what I call leadership. Posted by: Dawn at October 19, 2004 07:30 AM
