Jimi Hendrix

In one of my commutes to and from work this week I heard on the radio that September 18 was the anniversary of Jimi Hendrix's death.

I'm not sure where he ended up on the Rolling Stone's list of greatest guitar players. Sure, I could do some research but he's #1 on my list that's all that matters. He was THE Man.

I played the piano for years, I love piano music, pretty isn't it? Guitars speak, they touch, they make love, it can make you sad, make you happy, in fact it touches my soul.

Before I was even a teen I found Jimi. Jimi scared me as much as he fascinated me, literally he did. I should of been craving to hear the Monkeys like my friends. No, Jimi opened a world for a pre-teen that was dark, exciting and very different. I think it scared my mother more.

The Official Jimi Hendrix Website
states the week of September 28, PBS will have a week long series by Martin Scorsese on "The Blues" which will include Jimi. I'm not going to miss that one, which is scheduled to air October 2.

One of my favorite Jimi Hendrix stories involved, believe it or not, the Beatles' Sgt. Peppers Lonley Hearts Club band album. If you've never heard it, this is some of the most obscure/dense material the Beatles ever put it out.

Apparently, Jimi was a real Beatles fan because he went out on Friday and bought the album. The following Monday, he played and sang every song on that entire album during one of his club gigs. That's how gifted a musician he was.

Shame we had to lose him so young.

As a drummer, I share the same fondness for good guitar and Jimi was the greatest guitar player I've ever heard.

What a coincidence you'd mention the Monkees and Jimi together. Did you know:

Micky Dolenz saw Jimi playing in a club and flipped out, he liked Jimi so much. So, he arranged for Jimi to tour with Monkees. He was their opening act.
It didn't last long, though. Mickey still giggles and looks embarassed when he tells the story. Here's Jimi, doing his psychedelic (sp?) show, playing with his teeth, setting the guitar on fire and looking like a guy from another planet or something and you couldn't even hear him play through all the little girls screaming "Daa-vee!!" "We want the Monkees!!!"

Jimi got sick of it one night, threw his guitar into the crowd and quit.
And, went on to become a Guitar-God.

As such, he inspired my personal Guitar-God...Stevie Ray Vaughan.

Peel away the psychedelia and Jimi was also a great Texas bluesman. And, as an Army vet, his "Star Spangled Banner" was meant to be patriotic.

His impromtu Star Spangled Banner still blows me away.
